Shattered Grounds game report – Strakhov vs Bethayne in King of the Hill

Having missed an opportunity to play on Wednesday, I headed out to Connections on Renfrew intent on finding an opponent. When I arrived there was a game being set up between Ryan and Ben.  Ben has been on a bit of a tear with “Darth” Stryker (aka Lord Commander Stryker), so Ryan was predicting doom for whichever of his merc casters he was sending off to the gallows. Right next to them was Stephen, with his Legion arrayed before him, who jumped at the chance to kill some poor defenceless Khadorans. We threw down some terrain and ended up with a large rectangular hill (with obstructions on either end) in the middle.  Each player had a small 4″x6″ forest on his left and an obstruction on his right.  The obstruction near my end was a small thatch roofed hut.  My opponent had a small fountain on his side.

The lists:

I had decided I wanted to play Strakhov earlier this week, but had not actually gotten around to building a list with him.  I frantically started pulling models out of my case, burrowing down until I hit Assault Kommandos at the bottom.  Here is what I ended up with:

  • Kommander Strakhov (-6 pts)
  • * Torch 10 pts
  • * Destroyer 9 pts
  • * War Dog 1 pt
  • Assault Kommandos, full, 8 pts
  • * 2 x Flame Throwers 2 pts
  • Greylord Ternion 4 pts
  • Kossite Woodsmen, min, 4pts
  • Man-o-war Demo Corps, min, 6pts
  • Man-o-war Shocktroopers, min, 6pts
  • Widowmakers 4pts
  • Widowmaker Marksmen 2pts
  • Total 56 pts

I’d like to lie and say that I had a totally awesome reason for choosing each and every model, but I was literally plunking down models until I ran out of points.

My opponent had a bunch of magic-enabled legion models, leaving me to ponder just how bad Bethayne’s feat turn would end up being.  Here is his list:

  • Bethayne (-3 pts)
  • * Belphagor 0 pts
  • * Carnivean 11 pts
  • * Seraph 8 pts ** league model
  • 2 x Shredder @ 2 pts ea = 4 pts
  • Stinger 2 pts
  • Blackfrost Shard 5 pts
  • Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters, full, 8 pts
  • * Bayal, Hound of Everblight 3 pts
  • Blighted Nyss Raptors, full, 10 pts
  • The Foresaken 2 pts
  • Total 53 pts

Even more Legion

So my Legion collection got even bigger, and better painted, this week as I picked up some more painted Legion figures from Chad. I added:

Terpah
Striders
Strider UA
Deathstalker solo
Lylyth

All are excellently painted and will look even better when put next to the primed figures that make up the rest of my Legion force :-)

Legion explodes

Well my Legion army has exploded in size in the last few days. I finally assembled my unit of Grotesques and a friend was selling his Legion army, including some nicely painted pieces, to help fund a wedding and so over then weekend I picked up

  • painted Forsaken
  • painted Warmonger Warchief
  • Warspears
  • Raek
  • Incubi
  • Seraph
  • Legionnaires
  • Absylonia
  • Shepard
  • Angelius

The Legionnaires have been sanded and primed, the Incubi, Raek and Serpah are assembled and basecoated so I’ve got quite a few new units to add to my pool of available minis for Hordes games.

Building Legion models

I had some free time this weekend and so I took a moment to assemble some of the Legion figures I had sitting around the gaming den. I probably should have been painting but I really wasn’t in the mood and sometimes there is really nothing as satisfying as building a pile of figures.

I managed to get the Hex Hunters, Raek, Nephilim Bolt Thrower and Nephilim Protector built.

The Hex Hunters went together quite easily as did the Bolt Thrower. The Raek required some work to get the head plates and the jaw to fit into the rest of the body. The trickiest of the lot was the Protector and only because his weapon arm and second arm don’t attach and so I had to fiddle with arms to get them to match. It is something I am terrible at and really do a poor job of despite the years I have had to do this with various models.

Up next is the Grotesques box and then I think I need to look at getting another Heavy Warbeast so I can do all four tiers of Thagrosh’s theme list. These new additions will give me more options when building lists as I now have another infantry unit as well as several new light Warbeasts.

50pt Farrow v. Legion game notes

Chad dropped by today for a 50pt Hordes battle pitting his Lord Carver Farrow force against Thagrosh and some of his Legion minions.

Spell Martyrs

I stopped into Strategies and picked up the newly released Legion Spell Martyr blister. I’ve not been on the PP forums so I didn’t have a clue what the models did. Happily they aren’t a unit at all but solos. you can also buy up to three of them for a point each. So not only are they handy for channeling spells in your Legion list but additionally useful for filling up one or two point deficits in lists.

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try them out this weekend with Vayl or Thagrosh.

Looking at Legion: Blighted Nyss Archers

As part of my one process of becoming accustomed to my new Legion army I thought I would share some thoughts (not always correct :-) on some of the units and solos in the army. These are less tactics articles and more me thinking out loud about how to use these units. First up are the Blighted Nyss Archers.

Legion assembly

I took a few moments last night to finish assembling some Legion figures including the Shepard I picked up yesterday. I have to say that the mini is actually one of the better sculpts in the entire Hordes range. It has delicate details on the mini and a wonderful expression on the face. It is perhaps one of the few figures that I have seen in the Hordes range that have been done a disservice by the studio paint job.

Also noteworthy were the Strider Unit Attachment. Great sculpts and a wonderful sense of movement on both of the figures. They really stand out from the rest of the unit as well making it clear which figures are which. Unlike quite a few Cryx figures I might add.

I have a unit of Blighted Archers and Swordsmen to assemble and then I will be ready to get in some games with this force. Hopefully it will be ready for gaming on Sunday.

Vayl horde

So perhaps a Lylth horde is a bit overdone but what about a horde of Incite fueled Lesser Warbeasts?

Vayl, Disciple of Everblight +6 points
* 2x Harrier 2 points each
* Nephilim Protector 5 points
* 2x Shredder 2 points each
* 2x Stinger 2 points each

10 Blighted Archers 8 points
* Blighted Archers Officer & Ammo Porter 2 points
Shepherd 1 point
Striders 6 points
The Forsaken 2 points
3 Warmongers 5 points
